Bio

Hi, there. I'm Bonnie Nicholls, a singer/songwriter based in San Diego, Calif.

I perform as a solo artist (my new album is called Meet the New Me) and collaborate with other musicians. In January 2026, I did a Southwest tour with The Winter Sisters (my friends Cathryn Beeks and Sandé Lollis), and we continue to perform as a trio.  I'm also a member of Birds on a Train, an indie/folk band that plays covers and original tunes.  And for two years,  I co-hosted an invitation-only song circle every month.

I play keys, bass, melodica, and a smattering of guitar.  I often inject a sense of humor into my songs, through clever turns of phrase and a playful performance style. And I almost always wears a hat.

I wrote this song from the perspective of my mom who started to experience dementia. She lived in my house for a time, and I had a chance to observe her.

Gary Lee, who interviews San Diego-based singer-songwriters, had me on his show to talk about my music and play three songs. He got me to think about how I started – the little girl picking out music by ear on a neighbor's piano – and where I am today as a band member,  bassist, artist, and song circle organizer.
